Dope.

These five things are ways to change lives. They are also a constant struggle for people. They are actually known as needs. They are five persistent needs we have every moment of every day and if we can help people meet their needs then we can help solve their problems. We can think of there being two groups of needs,  internal and external needs. Or emotional or motion problems.  As we understand our purpose as Artist's & Designers we must understand that we are problem solvers. Problem solvers that help people move.

To be alive is to be in motion. The opposite is death. Understanding life and death as motivators explains humanity and the problems we face. Applying this truth is the mode Artist's & Designer's must take to create work that moves.

The secret to happy is a life filled with motion. There are five ways that lead to happy and they are based on the things you need.

Where Hip-Hop Was Born

TriBeCa, New York City, 10007

On August 11, 1973, a historic party took place in the recreation room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, marking a pivotal moment in Hip-Hop's birth. The party was organized by Kool Herc, a young Jamaican-American DJ known for his innovative mixing techniques. What makes this event even more remarkable is the crucial role played by Kool Herc's sister, Cindy Campbell. She collected admission fees at the door, allowing Kool Herc to invest in better DJ equipment. This support laid the foundation for future events and propelled Hip-Hop's growth.

A Response to Urban Challenges: Sedgwick Street's contribution to Hip-Hop cannot be separated from the socio-economic context of the time. The South Bronx, where Sedgwick Street is located, was grappling with urban decay, poverty, and limited opportunities. Hip-Hop emerged as a creative outlet for the youth, providing a means to express their experiences and frustrations. It became a catalyst for positive change, empowering individuals to reclaim their voices through music, dance, and art.

The Groundbreaking Party

Sedgwick Street nurtured some of the most influential figures in Hip-Hop's early days. Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, and DJ Kool Herc, among others, honed their skills and pioneered revolutionary techniques on this humble street. It was here that the art of breakbeats and scratching was perfected, introducing new sonic possibilities and shaping the future of Hip-Hop music. Sedgwick Street became a breeding ground for creativity and collaboration, fostering the growth of a movement that would transcend borders.

The legacy of Hip-Hop on Sedgwick Street reverberates through time, transcending geographical boundaries. What started as a local phenomenon in the Bronx has evolved into a global cultural force, influencing music, fashion, and artistic expression worldwide. Sedgwick Street stands as a symbol of the ingenuity and resilience of a marginalized community, whose creativity birthed a genre that continues to inspire and empower generations. As we celebrate the origins of Hip-Hop, we pay homage to the pioneers who transformed Sedgwick Street into a hallowed ground for music history.
